What is a Soul Journey?

A Soul Journey is the practice of entering an altered state of consciousness in order to receive information, guidance, and insight relating to an individual's healing path. Journeying has been used for healing, divination, spiritual exploration, and personal transformation by cultures around the world for thousands of years. Depending on the tradition, this altered state may be reached through drumming, chanting, dance, meditation, or other practices that help shift our awareness beyond our ordinary reality.

In my practice, the steady rhythm of the drum provides the doorway into this altered state. Once I have entered the journey, I move between what are often described as different realms or worlds, listening for the information that may be relevant to the intention we have set together. The drumming portion of the journey typically lasts 10–20 minutes. I may encounter guides, animal allies, ancestors, or other spiritual beings who offer insight, perspective, healing, or guidance.

A journey can be a deeply visual and intuitive experience, often unfolding through imagery, symbolism, sensations, emotions, and a sense of knowing. What comes through may bring awareness to something that has been asking for attention or offer insight into an area of your life that is ready to be explored.

When the journey is complete, I share what I experienced and we take time to explore what it may mean for you. When appropriate, the journey may be followed by gentle energy work to support integration and help bring the experience back into the body.

A Soul Journey may take us in many different directions, and I trust that as the journey unfolds, what emerges is what is most relevant and meaningful for your healing and personal growth in that moment. We often see only a small part of the greater picture from where we stand, while the unseen realms can open doors to perspectives, connections, and wisdom that are beyond our ordinary awareness. A journey may reveal something we were not consciously looking for, illuminate a connection we had not yet seen, or offer wisdom that gently shifts the way we understand ourselves and our path.

What might we explore?

There is no set formula for a Soul Journey. We begin by talking about what is happening in your life and what you would like support or insight around, and then allow the journey to guide us toward what feels most important.

Soul Retrieval

Within the practice of Soul Journeying, soul retrieval is based on the understanding that when we experience trauma or overwhelming events, we may lose connection with parts of ourselves as a way of protecting and coping. This can sometimes leave us feeling disconnected from our joy, our vitality, our sense of purpose, or aspects of who we once were.

A soul retrieval focuses on reconnecting with these parts and welcoming them back into greater wholeness. Rather than needing to revisit or relive the original experience, the journey offers an opportunity to reconnect with qualities, energy, and parts of ourselves that may have been left behind, supporting a deeper sense of integration and wholeness.

Ancestral Healing

Ancestral healing explores patterns, beliefs, emotions, and energetic influences that may have been carried through our family lines. Sometimes these are patterns we recognize in our families—ways of relating, coping, responding, or understanding ourselves that seem to repeat across generations. Other times, we may sense that we are carrying something we don't fully understand or that doesn't seem to belong entirely to us.

A journey may help bring these patterns into greater awareness, offering a different perspective on what has been carried forward and what may now be ready to be understood, released, or transformed. We may also connect with ancestral wisdom, strengths, or supportive energies that have been passed down alongside the challenges.

Ancestral healing isn't about placing blame on those who came before us or trying to rewrite the past. It is an opportunity to understand our place within our family story, honour what has shaped us, and make conscious choices about what we wish to carry forward. In this way, the healing can become not only personal, but part of creating a different path for those who come after us.

Animal Allies & Guides

A journey may bring us into connection with an animal in a number of different ways. Sometimes an animal appears as a guide, offering information, perspective, or guidance that is particularly relevant to the circumstances or season of life we are moving through. These encounters may be brief, with the animal appearing specifically to bring a message or teaching that is needed in the moment.

Other times, we may encounter what is often described as a power animal—an animal with whom we develop a deeper, ongoing relationship. Rather than appearing only for a particular question or circumstance, a power animal may be a long-standing ally, offering protection, strength, guidance, and teachings as we move through our lives.

The qualities, behaviours, and ways of being embodied by these animals can offer us another way of understanding ourselves and what we may need to bring into greater balance. A journey can help us explore these relationships and listen for what an animal may have to teach us at this particular point in our path.

Plant Allies & Guides

Plants can also appear within a Soul Journey as guides and allies. Much like animal guides, a plant guide may appear with information, insight, or teachings that are relevant to a particular question, circumstance, or season of life.

A plant ally, however, is a plant that wishes to develop a deeper relationship over time. Through repeated connection and attention, we may come to know a particular plant more deeply and develop an ongoing relationship with its qualities, teachings, and medicine. These relationships can become a meaningful way of deepening our connection with the natural world and learning to listen to the wisdom that surrounds us.

A journey may introduce us to a plant we have not consciously considered before, deepen an existing relationship, or reveal a quality or teaching that is particularly relevant to where we are now.

Energy Clearing & Extraction

Sometimes a journey may draw our attention to areas of dense, stagnant, or disruptive energy within our energetic field. This may include influences connected to our own thought patterns and experiences, the energetic impact of relationships or environments, or what may be experienced within the journey as an outside or spiritual influence.

When appropriate, the journey may be followed by intuitive energy work to clear what no longer feels supportive and restore a greater sense of balance and flow.

Inner Patterns, Guidance & Life Path

A journey can also help us look beneath the surface of recurring patterns, beliefs, fears, or old wounds that may be influencing how we see ourselves and move through the world. By bringing these patterns into greater awareness, we create an opportunity to understand them from a different perspective and begin to shift what may no longer be serving us.

Journeying can also be used to seek insight around a question, transition, relationship, decision, or sense of direction. This isn't about predicting the future or receiving a fixed answer about what will happen. Instead, the journey can offer a wider perspective—helping us see aspects of a situation that may be difficult to recognize from our usual vantage point and bringing forward wisdom that can support your own discernment and choices.

These are not separate treatments that you need to choose from. They are simply some of the ways a journey may unfold. You don't need to know exactly what you need before you arrive—we can create an intention together and allow the journey to guide us toward what is most relevant in that moment.

A little about my practice

I don’t identify as a shaman, nor do I claim to represent any particular Indigenous or cultural tradition. Journeying has existed in many forms across cultures, and I have learned from many teachers and traditions that have shaped my own relationship with this work.

My approach is grounded in curiosity, respect, and relationship—with ourselves, with the natural world, and with the unseen. Journeying does not require a particular religious belief or spiritual background. You are simply invited to come with curiosity and an open mind.

How often should I come?

There is no prescribed schedule for Soul Journeying. Some people come for a single session when they are looking for insight around a particular question, experience, or life transition, while others return periodically as part of their ongoing personal exploration.

If deeper work is being explored, we may meet more regularly while still allowing space between sessions to integrate what has emerged.

Come as you are

You don’t need to have all the answers—or even know exactly what you’re looking for.

Sometimes the most meaningful journeys begin simply with a willingness to listen, to become curious, and to see what might be waiting just beyond what we already know.
